obama seeing live coverage of osama death

The tension on his face and those of his most trusted staff is clearly visible. As Barack Obama receives an update on the raid on Osama bin Laden's complex in Abbottabad, Pakistan, it is very far from clear whether the news is good – or what the national security team had expected to hear. "It was probably one of the most anxiety-filled periods of time in the lives of the people who were assembled," said the White House counter-terrorism advisor John Brennan. "The minutes passed like days."

The plans began to take shape in 2009, when it emerged that Bin Laden's most trusted courier was based near Islamabad. US intelligence was able to find the residence the courier shared with his brother in Abbottabad. It was clear from the $1m compound's reinforcements that it had been designed for someone important. That person, CIA chief Leon Panetta said after a month's further investigation, was Osama bin Laden.

Two more months of surveillance and intelligence-gathering passed before Mr Obama and the National Security Council met for the first of five meetings on 14 March. In the final session, on 8.20am last Friday, the President was ready to authorise the raid on "Geronimo" – Osama's codename. Obama spent some of Sunday playing golf, before returning to the White House situation room. The elite 24 "black ops" team of Seal Team Six, officially known as the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, took off from Ghazi airbase in north-west Pakistan, where they had been on standby.

Osama live video

WASHINGTON: US president Barack Obama along with his high-level team, watched live coverage in the White House, as the commandos gunned down the world's most wanted terrorist Osama Bin Laden Via a video camera fixed to the helmet of a US Navy Seal.

Obama was watching the operation live when bin-Laden was shot in the left eye, the Daily Mail reports.

The Seal then carried out a 'double tap' military act, shooting him again, probably in the chest, to confirm that he was dead.

The footage of the battle in Bin Laden's Pakistani hideout, relayed to the White House by satellite, is believed to have shown one of his wives acting as a human shield to protect him as he blasted away with an AK47 assault rifle.

She died, along with three other men, including one of Bin Laden's sons.

Bin-Laden's body was buried at sea hours after Obama confirmed his death.

osama bin laden killed

WASHINGTON: A postmortem photograph of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden , killed by US forces in Pakistan Sunday, will be published, CIA chief Leon Panetta said Tuesday.

"The bottom line is that, you know, we got bin Laden and I think we have to reveal to the rest of the world the fact that we were able to get him and kill him," Panetta told NBC News.

"The government obviously has been talking about how best to do this, but I don't think there's any question that ultimately a photograph would be presented to the public," he said.

Meanwhile, White House spokesman Jay Carney said the photograph was "gruesome" and that it hasn't been decided yet whether to release it.

US Navy SEALs burst into Osama's room and shot him in the head while he was hiding behind a woman during the operation that lasted a few minutes Sunday. The unidentified woman and three men, one believed to be Osama's son, were also killed.

A DNA test proved that it was Osama's corpse.

OSAMA BIN LADIN DEATH LIVE OPERATION IN ABBOTABAD

President Obama's speech announcing the death of Osama bin Laden drew about 56.5 million viewers Sunday night, making it the most watched address of his presidency. As Variety noted, the huge rating came even though it aired after primetime hours in more than three-quarters of the country.

Osama bin Laden's death has rehashed the debate on the value of torture. Former officials from the Bush Administration claimed the success of the raid on bin Laden vindicated their policy of "enhanced interrogation techniques" that included waterboarding. A new report by the New York Times however, calls that claim into question, saying it played a minimal role at best. According to The Times "a closer look at prisoner interrogations suggests that the harsh techniques played a small role at most in identifying Bin Laden’s trusted courier and exposing his hide-out. One detainee who apparently was subjected to some tough treatment provided a crucial description of the courier, according to current and former officials briefed on the interrogations. But two prisoners who underwent some of the harshest treatment — including Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who was waterboarded 183 times — repeatedly misled their interrogators about the courier’s identity."

Former President George W. Bush has declined a White House invitation to attend a ceremony at Ground Zero in New York City on Thursday to mark the death of bin Laden. A spokesman for Bush said the former president preferred to stay out of the spotlight but appreciated the offer. "He continues to celebrate with all Americans this important victory in the war on terror," the spokesman said.

Rick Santorum, a two-term Senator from Pennsylvania, has officially formed a presidential exploratory committee. The announcement comes just ahead of the first Republican presidential debate in South Carolina on Thursday. "I filed today for an exploratory committee. I'm not announced for president, but basically I'm in the position now where I can participate in the FOX debate," Santorum said. The presidential debate, which is hosted by Fox News and the South Carolina Republican Party, requires participants to have formed exploratory committees.

Apparently, which newspapers Sarah Palin reads isn't the only thing the former vice presidential candidate can't name offhand. At the MSNBC party after the White House Correspondents' Dinner this weekend, Palin, along with others at the event, was asked to name the most influential journalist. In a scene reminiscent of her 2008 interview with Katie Couric, Palin couldn't seem to think of a name off the top of her head. "Oh my goodness, that's a great question," she said. "Um, gosh, that's a great question, I have to think about it, OK? Because there are many." When Greta Van Susteren, an anchor on Fox News, walked by, Palin said, "Greta Van Susteren is the most influential journalist!" It is worth noting Palin works for Fox News. And naturally, the whole exchange was caught on video.
